Now two months into my term as general director of Onema, I fully recognise the importance of the agency in efforts to restore the quality of water and aquatic environments in France. Five years after its founding and thanks to the considerable work on the part of my predecessor, Patrick Lavarde, and the entire workforce, Onema has now exited its development phase and entered a more operational phase.

A regional initiative to raise awareness of local prosecutors concerning the protection of aquatic environments

Prosecutors in charge of environmental issues in the Picardie region met at the Prosecutor general's offices in Amiens on 25 September with representatives from Onema and State services in charge of the water police. The meeting was an initiative of the deputy prosecutor general at the Court of appeals in Amiens, Jean-Philippe Rivaud, to raise awareness of local prosecutors concerning the protection of water and aquatic environments, and to coordinate penal policies and inspection programmes in the water field.

Innovative tools and a mixed status report for aquatic biodiversity

Scientists, managers, companies, associations, etc., over 200 people in all responded to the invitation by Onema for a national symposium on aquatic biodiversity, held on 14 and 15 November in Paris. Some 30 partnership-research projects were presented, each providing new data on the life in our rivers and lakes.

Encouraging results in efforts to conserve the Rhone apron

Over the past 20 years, projects to conserve the Rhone apron have produced modest, but very real results. During the symposium on Aquatic biodiversity, organised by Onema, Pascal Roche from the Rhone-Alpes regional office presented the results obtained by current projects and discussed the potential for restoring the species.

The participants in research on water and aquatic environments

Who are the people involved in R&D on water and aquatic environments in France? What research programmes and projects are currently underway? Where are public and private research units located? Since 2009, the Carteau database has presented a map of the scientific community working in the field of water and aquatic environments. The document "CARTEAU 2012, panorama of R&D for water and aquatic environments in France" was recently published.

Update on knowledge and tools to manage contaminants and pollution in aquatic environments

The results produced over three years of R&D work supported by Onema will be presented to managers of water and aquatic environments. The symposium will review efforts to control pollution, highlight progress made in methods to assess risks and present new operational tools to monitor and diagnose environments.
