The staff of almost 900 works to achieve the major missions of Onema in continental France as well as in the overseas territories. Using their skills and know-how gained in the field, engineers and technicians work on aquatic environments throughout the country, in the national headquarters, in the nine regional

Regional offices

Nine regional offices group engineers and technicians who are specialised in gathering and processing data, in providing technical support for water-management policies and efforts, and in organising surveillance activities for aquatic environments.

The nine regional offices:

  • organise the collection and use of data on the status of environments and species;
  • provide technical support to State agencies and services, and to water managers, notably in the form of ecological engineering;
  • provide technical and regulatory management and leadership for inspection and policing activities carried out by the local offices.

Six of the nine regional offices are assigned to missions for the river-basin authorities and also coordinate the other regional offices active in the same river basins.

Local offices

The technicians and environmental technical agents working in local offices have two main missions: inspections on water use and policing activities on water and fishing; collection of data on the status of environments and species.
