Water at Rio+20

Water will be one of ten topics debated in addition to the two major issues, the green economy and governance.
In July 2010, the U.N. general assembly recognised water and sanitation services as fundamental rights.
As of today, 783 million people still do not have access to drinking water and 2.5 billion people live without sanitation services..

At the Rio+20 meeting, goals should be set concerning the management of waste water, in particular:

a reduction in water pollution caused by household, industrial and agricultural effluents;   policies to promote the rational use of water;   wastewater treatment and the use of wastewater as a resource, particularly in areas confronted with urban expansion.

In line with the conclusions of the World water forum

In line with the conclusions of the World water forum held in Marseille in March 2012, France will defend three priorities in Rio that are the central pillars of its national water policy:

accelerated implementation of the right to drinking water and sanitation, with particular emphasis placed on management of wastewater;

enhanced consistency in water, energy and food-security policies in order to optimise their contribution to the green economy;

better integration of water in the institutional framework for sustainable development in the post-2015 agenda
